The fields of 3D printing and rapid manufacturing of prototypes and products are growing incredibly fast. The technological diversities have created large differences in the kind of suppliers and in the users’ need for knowledge. Mikrocentrum follows this trend closely and has decided that the successful event RapidPro is ready for a change. For the upcoming, 4th edition, the professional exhibition RapidPro is divided into RapidPro Industrial and RapidPro Home Professional. Both events take place at the same time and next to each other, and are free of charge.
You don’t have to follow the news much to realise that 3D printing is hot. Much-discussed examples such as printed food, implants and a canal side house speak to the imagination. At the same time, 3D printing is a field that has been in development for over 20 years with companies such as NASA, GE Aviation and Boeing as driving forces. 3D printing makes it possible to launch a new product or service from your home at high-speed and low-cost, but it especially offers new business opportunities for starting entrepreneurs, SME and large OEMs.
“The large diversity in innovative possibilities also means a large variety in the know-how users require. That can be challenging sometimes,” says Els van de Ven, Mikrocentrum’s exhibition manager. “While it worked well to combine the offer of knowledge and products in one event for the previous editions, at this moment the market is ready for a set-up with two co-events. This way, both the B2B user as the home professional will find what he or she is looking for more quickly.”
Industrial and international
The industry will find everything they might want or need at RapidPro Industrial 2014. Whether it is state of the art knowledge the visitor comes for, or to do research for an investment, the familiar combination of exhibition and convention offers something for everyone. Van de Ven: ”The exhibitors who have already registered guarantee an offer of high quality equipment, materials, software and services. There will be industrial additive manufacturing machinery as well as professional scanning, measuring and digitising equipment, and light will be shed on metal, polymers and technical ceramics in this too. The different knowledge-based institutions will present their developments. Product developers and high-tech service providers will offer their services in prototype and product development. With regard to the convention programme: it is substantial and international. Attention will be paid to well-known segments such as medical and dental, but also to the fields of automotive, aviation, architecture, jewellery and machinery manufacturing. Furthermore, lectures will be held that present overviews of European projects that are currently in progress or have recently finished.
Home Professional
Professional home users such as (industrial) designers, artists and young entrepreneurs have come to the right address at RapidPro Home Professional. At this part of the exhibition, they can find suppliers of 3D printers, materials and software, entirely focused on them. “Recently, the offer in 3D printers has increased largely, which means the prices have decreased considerably. This creates great opportunities for the home professional, who can now make low-cost prototypes or unique end products. To further help this group, RapidPro Home Professional, besides products, also offers lectures and workshops which will help the home professional get more out of 3D printing,” says Van de Ven.

As for the main software players, they are all keen to reveal what they have been working on. For instance, Jon Hirschtick, CEO of OnShape and the former founder of SolidWorks has got the ‘old team’ back together and will be demonstrating a new design system for the cloud-era.
Autodesk CEO, Carl Bass is coming over to present again with plenty of Fusion and Inventor news. Dan Staples, director of product development, Solid Edge at Siemens PLM will be highlighting forthcoming updates whilst DS SolidWorks will be demonstrating the new Industrial Conceptual, as well as some other innovative cloud-based offerings that have yet to be announced.
